This simple verse “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” has been one of my favorites for repeating in the tough times. My grandmother used to say “This to shall pass.” which is another good one for assuring myself that I can make it through whatever I am facing that is troubling me. They are not long or elaborately worded. They are not impressive to the bystander. But they serve the purpose.
During the holidays, many people are lonely or depressed. So often those who are surrounded by family have to’s or parties and presents to manage don’t see those who are not like them. This Advent season is the beginning of another year by the Christian calendar. It is a time of preparing our hearts for the birth of the Christ child. Every child that is born requires preparation by those who are waiting on them. I have to ask you, how much preparing for the birth of Jesus do we do? My guess is very little.
As we approach Christmas this year, I invite to you notice those in your sphere of acquaintance who don’t seem to have the “holiday spirit.” I encourage you to listen to someone tell you why this time of year is difficult for them. I hope that you will prepare your hearts and minds for the miracle of a creator who desires to be in relationship with you so much that humanity became an option. Be present with those who find this time of year the most difficult. Maybe you can even invite them to join you in Christmas Eve service or for a holiday meal? But most importantly, be present with your love and offer them the gift that could change everything by telling them your story about why Christmas matters to the whole world.
