My husband read an article about resetting your metabolism. In the article, they suggested getting sunshine everyday as one of the ways your body can increase its metabolism. My uncle who is a doctor used to tell me (when I complained about not being able to sleep) that I needed more exercise and more sunshine. As I was reading the gospel of John this morning I was thinking about how this book does such a wonderful job of using light as the imagery for God. If we think of the physical therapeutic qualities of light (sunshine) and the spiritual qualities of light, we realize that God’s light helps us stay healthy as well. Spending time in prayer or reading the word builds up the light in our lives and keeps the darkness at bay. On those days when I feel rejected or have struggled to make any headway in my church planting ministry, I find the joy still in so many other things that God has placed in my life. Just feeling the sunshine on my face while I listen to the sounds of nature in my back yard can be life giving in so many ways. I feel the connection to God’s beautiful creation and it helps me to breathe more deeply. I can quiet my to do list and my spirit by stepping into a computer free zone. I can refill my spiritual battery as my skin warms in the light. Something so simple can sometimes be forgotten. I invite you to take a walk, visit Turkey mountain, sit in a lounge chair, open your Bible and soak up some light. I promise your soul will be thankful.
