The season of the liturgical calendar called Lent is one that most people find awkward and difficult. For many, it has been reduced to simply giving up a bad habit. It is meant to invoke Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness where he fasted and was faced with temptation. It is meant to remind us of our own mortality and the certainty of death.
In the midst of facing our own impermanence, we walk to Easter and the promise of the resurrection. These forty days lead us to reflect on the meaning of our lives and if we are truly living. We are asked to consider our own indulgence, our depravity and our worth. None of this is easy. Nobody really wants to look at ourselves this hard. It is much easier to stay on our hamster wheel and keep doing the same thing we always do. But this awkward season asks us to consider repentance-changing our ways and going in a new direction.
You are invited to begin this journey with Living Water UMC. We are spending this season asking ourselves if we have really made room in our lives to be “deeply loved” by the radical nature of Jesus. Instead of focusing on our failures and inadequacies, we will be focusing on allowing ourselves to be loved and forgiven in a world that often is full of hurt. Please take this journey with us.
